We are doing a joint project with CDI, 5 days where you can learn DJing skills, spit lyrics, and use the recording studio. These days are the 6th and 7th April, as well as the 14th, 15th and 16th. Dayne and Natty will both be there, hopefully it'll all go well.
We're also going on a residential to the new forest, where we can do activities like climbing, archery and kayaking. If you're interested, pop in and see the youth workers for dates and a letter for your parents.
Unfortunately that is all we're doing over Easter- we have lots of trips planned for the summer though, trust me! These will be things like going to thorpe park, going to London, cooking, DJing and recording, our residential to Spain, trips to youlbury, coral reef, and loads of other places. So looking forward to that!
We're really pleased that loads of you have been coming in recently, and if there are any things that you would like on during the sessions, don't be afraid to let us know :)
In other news, we will be starting a youth forum soon. It'll be where about 6 of you get to decide things like what equipment needs replacing in the youth centre, and the way you think things should be run. If you're interested, come in and chat to Kat or Gillian.
funding won for trip to spain, half term fun coming up
Date:

News:
We have some great news- we got the funding! We’re now planning a trip to Spain with the youth centre, having secured some lovely money from the YOF panel. Thanks to Abingdon Youth centre for giving us a lift in their mini-bus, you saved us a long journey.
We’re also planning some February half term events – we were thinking maybe Madame Tussards and the Tower of London? Would love to know your thoughts. We’re planning a disco for Bob Marley’s birthday too- the exact date to be announced at the time.
We have a new project starting soon- all about sex and relationships. But to save you having to talk to us embarrassing old people about it, we’re training up young people to be clued up on sex, health and relationship issues, so you can talk to each other. Of course we’re always here if you do want to chat!
Til next time!
snow delays, young parent's group
Date:
21-1-2010
News:
Hello! Two weeks have gone by so it's time for another youth club update.
We stayed open all through the snow, nothing stops us. The only thing that had to be changed was our YOF bid! We were planning to travel to Banbury to apply for some money, but the snow meant that it was delayed for a week. We've made the bid now, fingers crossed and we'll let you know the outcome!
Another exciting thing that has been happening really is the restart of our young parents group. Every Tuesday, 12-2, all young parents are welcome, bring your children if you want, for information, advice, guidance and lunch ...(We do good lunches).
There is A LOT of stuff coming up that we hope you will all be interested in, including International Women's Day, Bob Marley's birthday, Valentines Day and so on. More details will appear on these events as they get closer, but the youth centre will be celebrating them all :)
That's all folks!
still open despite the snow!

News:
First week back at youth club is going well :) We opened for the first time since Christmas on Monday... But it was a very quiet night due to snow! We still opened for the rest of the week though, and had some lovely sessions drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows.
A lot of this week has been spent preparing for the YOF bid presentation we’re making on Wednesday….we’ve done a power point presentation and gone through the guidance notes, and our four young people are thoroughly prepared! The money we want is for a youth club trip to Spain so fingers crossed!
All sessions this week and next will be running regardless of snow, so all that is left for me to say is happy new year, we hope to see you at the youth club soon!
Black History Month at Blackbird Leys Youth Centre October 2009
Date:
16-11-2009
News:
In Britain, October is Black History Month and this year we celebrated in a number of ways. We looked at the achievements of Black scientists, writers, engineers and freedom fighters, learning a little bit about many different figures. There was an array of books written by or about famous Black people.
On Saturday the 24th of October the youth club and the African-Caribbean Project jointly presented a day of celebration of Black history. In the Glow Hall, African-Caribbean food was available (free chicken and fried dumplings to all youth club members), along with cards and posters with a focus on the Black community. There was music from Natty and Cornerstone and the chance to have your photo taken for future generations to look at.
Upstairs, in the main youth club room, there was the chance to design and paint a T-shirt which reflected your identity. Some people chose to paint flags representing all of the countries which they know their family have links to, whilst others just painted their names or football team. The designs were bright, diverse and attractive -just like our young people.
Natty Mark taught an African History workshop and shared his knowledge around the achievements of great African leaders and their societies. He told us the story of Yaa Asantewa, a great leader of the Ashanti people, who resisted colonial power in Ghana in 1900. The young people in that workshop told us that they had found it very interesting and that they wanted to learn more.
We had a Black History quiz with a £10 HMV voucher as the first prize and a Levi Roots cookbook as the second prize. All of the answers were in the posters and information in youth club but it wasn’t an easy feat and you had to spend time to complete the quiz. We had to decide between two winners with a tie-breaker question and Kiah and Jay won the prizes. There was a second Levi Roots book for the winner of the adult entries.
On Wednesday the 28th of October, a small group of young people visited the Imperial war Museum in London to see the From War to Windrush Exhibition. This told the stories of some of the thousands of West Indian men and women who chose to fight for Britain in the First and Second World Wars. There were also many Black servicemen and women fighting in both wars who were born in Britain.
We had the chance at the museum to look around the Holocaust exhibition, a permanent exhibition which explores the horrific treatment in Germany of not only Jewish people, but also people with disabilities or learning difficulties, gay men, gypsies, the many mixed race people living in Germany and others. The video footage, photographs and other exhibits were powerful and distressing but we left feeling that we had learned about something really important- what happens when we don’t address the issues of prejudice. We crossed London on the underground and returned on the train- an adventure in itself!

How much fun is the weekender project
Date:
12-8-2009
News:
The weekender project is opening Oxfordshire's youth centres to young people at weekends. This is a response to feedback we've had from local young people; that you want more stuff at the weekends, more things to do and places to go.
At Blackbird Leys Youth Centre, the building is open for sports, arts, pool, TV & Games, DJing and more, so why not go along and see what's up?
It's great, and you don't have to take my word for it. Ask Billy the Biscuit:

Friday Night 7-9pm is a senior night with a music focus. Young People are currently involved in achieving accredited outcomes in DJing, using the centres own equipment we are offering various levels of accreditation depending on skills. This offers the opportunity for young people to progress to higher levels of learning as they complete each stage.
Further to this we are working towards developing and recording positive lyrics and making a video in partnership with Sound Works the local recording studio. The aforementioned Disco grew from these sessions. Young People will gain accredited outcomes for planning, organising and running this event.
Saturday morning 11am-1pm is breakfast club with a health eating/lifestyle focus, the session kicks of at 11am, the young people prepare breakfast and join in discussions about healthy eating and health lifestyles. Other activities include art and design and hair and makeup, both young women and young men have shown interest and active involvement and enthusiasm in these events when encouraged. As always there is lively debate around these issues.
Saturday continues 2-4pm with a later session where the forum and meetings get underway/ Flowing through these sessions are other activities and opportunities for discussion and involvement with the youth work team who are available to engaged young people in creative and specialist provision.
