Hints & tips for making a successful bid
It may seem obvious, but before sending it in, please make sure your application form:
- Is fully filled in
- Contains all the information asked for
- Contains accurate contact details for all contacts
Please also make sure that you keep a copy of the completed application for your own records, as we are unable to provide copies at a later date.
Is it suitable?
Advice from the government says that when you're applying, these should be your top three priorities:
- Should involve young people at every stage
- Must meet one or more of the five Every Child Matters priorities
- Should promote active involvement in your neighbourhood/community
CRUCIAL: Make sure the Fund you're applying to is the right one!
Youth Opportunity Fund for bids for young person led projects up to £7,500
Youth Capital Fund for bids for young person led bids for facilities (and new equipment as part of new facilities) between £2,500 and £50,000
Chill Out Fund for matched funding bids of up to £5,000
If you are making a bid for the Youth Capital Fund, or a bid of over £1,000 to the Youth Opportunity Fund, you will need to make a presentation at one of the meetings. Please still include all the information in your application form, as invitations to present will be based on applications.
Involvement of young people
The aim of the Youth Opportunity Fund and the Youth Capital Fund is to involve young people. Applications should:
- Present a project for children and young people aged 13 –19 (up to 24 for disabled young people)
- Genuinely come from young people’s ideas
- Be completed by young people (adults can provide support)
Every Child Matters priorities
The Every Child Matters priorities, identified by young people and children, are:
- Being healthy - Enjoy good physical and mental health
- Staying safe - Be protected from harm and neglect and grow up able to look after themselves
- Enjoying and achieving - Develop self confidence and life skills, achieve success and be acknowledged for it and have a fun time!
- Making a positive contribution - to your peers, the local community and society
- Achieving economic well being - Reach your full potential and make the most of your lives.
We are especially interested in applications which:
- Show how the funding will improve things to do and places to go for young people
- Show how young people will benefit and what difference it will make
- Commit to delivering activities at the times that young people and the local community
want, including on Friday and Saturday nights.
Involvement in your neighbourhood/community
The Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fun are for positive activities and facilities for young people at neighbourhood level, i.e. what young people want locally.
Activities funded through the Youth Opportunity Fund can cover a range of interests including sports, the Arts and ICT interests. You can find a list of projects supported so far here.
The Youth Capital Fund can be used to refurbish or build a youth space within an existing community amenity, for youth shelters, mobile skate parks and ICT as new build facilities.
Bids should show strong proof of support from local young people.
Projects which will achieve their goals
We're keen to support projects that have a good chance of success and will produce real positive effects for local young people and their local neighbourhood.
You can help your bid by making sure that your application is:
- Supported by an organisation that has a track record of working successfully with young people
- Sponsored by an adult who can provide real support, e.g. a youth worker or community worker
- Able to show a start date and finish date for your project , and a clear breakdown of expenditure
It might also help if
- You have received funding from other places (proof required)
- Your project shows value for money
- A range of young people are involved, particularly those who are marginalized or disadvantaged
- Activities/projects provide recognition and/or accreditation
The effect of previous successful applications
Applications from groups of young people who have previously been funded will only be considered
if evaluation for the previous bid has been received.
We are particularly interested in applications from new groups this year.
The effect of previous unsuccessful applications
If you've applied and been turned down, you can submit a new application for funding straight away. Before you reapply:
It may be that with some amendments, your application would be successful.
The Funding Guidance Pack
You can find much more information about applying, including application checklists, an application flow-chart, comparison of the different funds and more in the Funding Guidance Pack.
Before making your application you should download the Funding Guidance Pack and read it in full. This is the best way to make sure your application contains everything it needs.
