OYMS recruit, train and support adult volunteers from local communities who are interested in making a difference to a young persons life.
OYMS volunteers are all ages (18+) and come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. They all bring different qualities and skills, and are as unique as the young people we work with. We use these and other factors to successfully match them with an appropriate young person.
All mentors have to attend mentor training, which runs three times a year.
The training programme covers four basic units that mentors will require for their one-to-one work:
All mentors receive regular support and supervision. Supervision provides an opportunity for mentors to confidentially discuss issues surrounding the relationship with the young person and focus on any specific issues that arise.
Mentor workshops are held monthly in Oxford, Banbury and Abingdon, where mentors can socialise, confidentially discuss common issues, and use each others' experience to help them improve their work.
They also have the opportunity to attend more training.
If you're aged 18+ and are interested in helping young people, we would like to hear from you.
