Nights and Days out in Oxfordshire

At an evening gigNot sure what to do with your time? Don't worry. Learning how to have fun is a skill like any other, and you have to work at it.

The good news is that Oxfordshire is full of fun stuff to do and interesting places to go.

Read on for some suggestions of local ways to spend your days and nights out.

The Basics

Bored? You just need to get motivated and find some things to do. Here's how:

  • Draw up a list of things you'd like to do
  • Find some friends who'd like to do them with you
  • Check out what's available locally
  • Go out and have fun

Theatre and Concerts

Seeing live performances is exciting and tickets for under 18s often cost less than a trip to the cinema. You can see music, dance, drama and more at The Mill, Pegasus, Old Fire Station Theatre, the Oxford Playhouse, The New Theatre Oxford, and Theatre Chipping Norton. There are also special events and festivals, especially in Oxford, where you can see performances outside or in unusual locations.

Remember to ask for young person’s concessions or standby tickets when you book, and sign up to the venue's email list so you can find out about more events.

Young people's Centres

The Youth Service runs youth centres in towns across Oxfordshire where you can meet friends and learn stuff about yourself and others. Drop by the Youth Centre near you to check it out.

Your shout about Youth Centres

  • The club is heavy. It’s where everyone hangs out.
  • It’s brilliant cause we’re always doing stuff, but you don’t just do it for us, we’ve got to help organise and things like that.
  • It lets you have some space without being hassled, although we do get hassled about subs sometimes, but we don’t pay a lot and it’s worth it.
  • I like it that we get treated like young adults and not like little kids.
  • I can just come by and have a chat, maybe not be about for a few weeks but still come back and feel that I have been missed.
  • I know it’s somewhere I can have fun and forget about stuff.

Gigs and Festivals

Folk, Jazz, indie, electro, whatever you like, there's a good chance it's being performed somewhere in Oxfordshire.

  • Find out more on the music page.

Art Centres, Museums, Galleries

Museums, art centres and galleries tend to have occasional evening events, and they're often free or cheap to young people. Places like Modern Art Oxford, the Museum of the History of Science, Banbury Museum, and the River and Rowing Museum in Henley have regular events throughout the year, where you can catch films, talks, workshops and more.

Clubs, Societies and Groups

Hanging out with people who share your interests can be a real pleasure, especially if you don't have many good friends in your classes or place of work.

Keeping safe

Wherever you go, whatever you do, make sure you do it safely.

  • Carry your mobile
  • Stick with your friends
  • Know how you're getting home

You can get more information on keeping safe on the keeping safe, personal safety and seasonal safety pages.
