In a crisis?
Keep the Survival Guide in your bag
The Young People's Survival Guide for Oxfordshire goes out to all year 11s (and many others!) in the county each year. On every page you'll find links, advice, information, helplines and more on most topics of concern to young people.
So, whatever the crisis, flip through the Survival Guide. You should be able to find a contact that can help.
Crisis Situation?
- In a crisis try to remain calm - don't go into automatic panic mode
- Remember you are not alone - there's always someone you can turn to by using the Help Directory, or the contacts and websites linked from the pages of the guide
- No-one has all the answers and it's ok to admit you don't know, but it's a good idea to know where you can start looking for those answers
So, once you've had a look through the Survival Guide, bookmark it or write down the web address (www.spired.com/guide) so you'll be able to find it again - you never know when it'll be useful.
Emergency?
- In a life and death situation ring 999 and ask for the service (police, fire or ambulance) you need
- 112 is the emergency number to dial from a mobile - it works throughout Europe even when you have no credit, no coverage by your own provider and the keypad is locked.
- These pages will help you about specific emergencies:

Helplines
Many organisations have helplines that provide information and/or advice on a particular topic. They are often available all day, or late at night when you most need to talk to someone.
Some helplines are free (Freefone)
and will not appear on the
telephone bill, but they may not be
free from mobiles. Numbers that
begin with the prefix 0345 or 0845
are local call rate and will appear
on the bill. If you are worried about
someone at home knowing you
called, use a public phone box. Some helplines will call you back
so you don't have to pay for the
call.
When you first call a helpline you might get nervous or start to cry. Don’t worry. The person on the other end of the phone has been trained to handle your call, and may even know first-hand what you're going through.
What you tell them is strictly confidential.
