Participation Graffiti project
welcome to the spired.com graffiti participation project

From February to July 2003, Spired.com was involved in a six-month project of visiting youth groups, and asking the people there to come up with slogans or messages they felt were important enough to wear in public as badges or t-shirts, or display as signs and stencils.

We used political and issue-based graffiti as a starting point.

Sessions were advertised with posters

At the close of the project, project worker Aimee Evans had visited 319 young people from 13 different youth groups across Oxfordshire, from large youth centre groups to youth councils to groups for young mothers, homeless people and asylum seekers.

You can see some of the statements, signs and slogans they made here.

First Badge Made for the Project

The aim of the project was to gather statements about the issues young people in Oxfordshire felt were important, and encourage issue-based debate and expression.

We also would record this expression publicly on www.spired.com, Oxfordshire County Council Youth Service's website for young people.

Rights-based slogans were popular.
