Notes:

  • Some 20-30 of the statements were copied, found or inspired by the media. These were chosen because the young people felt they were statements they could ally themselves with, and so they have been included.
  • Statements which the young people later withdrew have not been included, according to their wishes. These were usually negative statements that lead to discussion, and some personal statements they felt uncomfortable about sharing. Negative staments included:
    • Sexist statements
    • Racist statements
    • Homophobic statements
    • Aggressive statements
  • Most young people wanted to make a badge with a personal statement or name, either as gifts for friends or for themselves. We allowed them to make them, and where they were happy to show them to other people and have them photographed, included them in the report.
  • Many young people wished to make badges with the name or colours of a football club. This was discouraged, to avoid the sessions being disrupted by discussions about football. Though some people made a football badge as well as a badge with a statement, only statements about football have been included, no team badges.
  • At one session four specific issues were presented for discussion. These were
    • Clean streets - free of Graffiti and Gum
    • Old People afraid in their own homes
    • People throwing litter out of cars
    • Pollution and the environment
