Using Condoms Correctly

Mint flavoured condomCondoms are very good contraception. If you follow the instructions, and use a new one every time you have sex, condoms are 98% effective!

So make sure you know how to use one properly. Practice on your own first, if you need to.

  1. Wait until the penis gets hard. Take the condom out of the wrapper, being careful not to damage it.
  2. If the penis has a foreskin which is easy to roll back, it's usually easier to do this before putting on the condom.
  3. Unroll the condom a bit to check that it's the right way round before putting it near the erect penis.
  4. Squeeze the tip of the condom to get rid of any air. Place over the tip of the hard penis.
  5. Roll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis.

During sex, you may need to check that the condom hasn't slipped off. If it does, or if you suspect the condom is damaged (e.g. by fingernails) don't take a chance, use another one.

After sex, take the penis out carefully, while it is still hard, holding the condom at the base to stop it slipping off.

Wrap the condom in a tissue and put it in a bin, not down the toilet, they can cause blockages.
